Ahead of SNL’s Season 50 finale, speculation ran rampant that it could be Colin Jost and Michael Che’s final turn as Weekend Update hosts. While the duo never outright confirmed the rumors during Saturday’s episode, if they do indeed prove true, the duo went out with a bang — delivering an epic final Joke Swap that included a cameo from Jost’s wife (and the night’s host), Scarlett Johansson.
Che got a few early licks on Jost, forcing him to read jokes about Black soap operas and Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl Halftime performance. But after years of Che making jokes at Johansson’s expense, Jost finally got the last laugh when his wife wheeled up to the anchor desk and forced Che to read a lengthy, groveling apology directly to her face. Not done, however, Che tried one final attempt to get Jost to say the N-word with a joke about the son of Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr, Nick Kerr.
If this truly was Jost and Che’s final stint as Weekend Update anchors, it certainly lived up to the hype. Jost appeared more emotional than Che throughout the segment, though it was Che who embraced Jost as Update came to a close. If this is the end, it marks the conclusion of one of the most successful Weekend Update eras in SNL’s 50-year history — a run that began back in 2014.
