No Reserve: 1955 Jaguar XK140 MC Drophead Coupe 5-Speed for sale on BaT Auctions – ending August 21 (Lot #206,265)

This 1955 Jaguar XK140 MC is a drophead coupe that was built on April 1, 1955, and delivered to its Chicago-based first owner via Max Hoffman in New York. Chassis G293182 was purchased by the seller’s father in Los Angeles in August 1964 and placed into storage in 1972, where it remained until ownership was transferred to the seller in 2005. A subsequent refurbishment performed by XKs Unlimited of San Luis Obispo was completed in 2006. The work included resealing and repainting the 3.4-liter straight-six as well as installing a five-speed manual transmission and a custom driveshaft. The car later received a repaint in its factory Lavender Grey along with red leather upholstery and a Fawn soft top. A four-row radiator core was installed in 2024, and additional equipment includes twin SU carburetors, 16″ wire wheels, Lucas driving lamps, and lap belts. The car was shown at the JCNA Concours d’Elegance in 2008, where it was awarded second place in the XKs Driven Division. This XK140 MC DHC was listed on BaT in May 2025, and it is now offered at no reserve with a spare four-speed manual gearbox and driveshaft, factory literature, tools, a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate, a 1964 sales invoice, refurbishment records, JCNA judging sheets, and a California title.

The Drophead Coupe features an integrated windshield frame, roll-up side windows, exterior door handles, and an insulated convertible top with a plastic rear window. This example was delivered from the factory in Lavender Grey and underwent a color change to lilac prior to 1964. It was refinished back to its factory shade in 2007, and a replacement Fawn soft top was also installed at that time. Additional equipment includes full-width chrome bumpers with overriders, Lucas fog lights, a split windshield, front vent windows, and dual exhaust outlets. There is an area of rust ahead of the right rear wheel well, and a collection of paint meter readings is presented in the gallery.

Silver-finished 16″ wire wheels wear two-eared knock-off hubs and are mounted with Vredestein Sprint Classic tires. A matching spare wheel with a Marathon bias-ply tire is stowed beneath the trunk floor. The four-wheel drum brakes were serviced in August 2023, including the installation of replacement wheel cylinders, shoes, and adjusters.

The cabin features adjustable seats that were re-trimmed in red leather in 2008, and replacement color-coordinated door panels and carpets were installed. Jaguar-branded lap belts are fitted, and a nonoperational Radiomobile AM radio is installed in the dash. The wood dash and window trim are worn, the driver door window does not fully lower, and the turn signal switch needs to be held down to function.

The four-spoke steering wheel fronts Smiths instrumentation consisting of a 140-mph speedometer and gauges for oil pressure, coolant temperature, and amperage. The reverse-sweep tachometer does not work, and the fuel level gauge is said to function intermittently. The five-digit odometer shows 90k miles, approximately 2,300 of which were added under the seller’s ownership.

The 3.4-liter inline-six is equipped with a C-type cylinder head. Work by XKs Unlimited during the refurbishment included removing and inspecting the cylinder head, cleaning and repainting the block, and resealing the engine. The dual SU carburetors were overhauled, the fuel tank was flushed, and the radiator was re-cored in August 2023 due to overheating issues.
